Dr Garrick Hileman is one of the world’s most-cited researchers of cryptocurrencies and distributed ledger technologies. He received his PhD from the London School of Economics and is a researcher at the University of Cambridge, where he teaches on cryptocurrencies and distributed leader technologies. Dr. Peter Rizun is a physicist and entrepreneur living in Vancouver, Canada. He is the Chief Scientist for Bitcoin Unlimited, focusing on the development of analytical theory that explains properties and emergent phenomenon of the Bitcoin Network. Peter is also the co-founder and co-managing editor of Ledger, the world’s first peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to cryptocurrency research, published by the University of Pittsburgh. He was the recipient of the $105,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) CGS Doctoral Award and was recognized as a “Leader of Tomorrow” by the Alberta Science and Technology Foundation (ASTech). He holds a B.A.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Calgary.
Eva Kaili is a Member of the European Parliament, elected in 2014. In her capacity as the Chair of the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment body (STOA) she has, been working intensively on promoting innovation as a driving force of the establishment of the European Digital Single Market. She has been particularly active in the fields of blockchain technology, m/eHealth, big data, fintech and cybersecurity. Since her election she has also been very active in the field of taxation, where she has been the Rapporteur of the ECON committee’s annual tax report. Professor George M. Giaglis is Director of the Institute for the Future at the University of Nicosia, as well as a leading expert on blockchain technology and applications and advisor to many blockchain projects and technology start-ups. George has been working on digital currencies and blockchain since 2012, with his main focus being on new forms of industrial organization (programmable smart contracts, decentralized applications and distributed autonomous organizations) and new forms of corporate financing (token economy, crypto-economics and ICOs). Previously, Jeff was a senior official at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 2014-2017. As FinTech Advisor to Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo, he was Founding Director and architect of LabCFTC, the CFTC’s hub for engagement with FinTech innovation (the first launched by a U.S. market regulator). He established and chaired the CFTC blockchain, virtual currencies and FinTech working group from inception in 2015. Jeff led FinTech and RegTech coordination with domestic and international regulators, and led an international regulator workstream on post-trade digital innovation. Jeff previously led the CFTC’s Division of Clearing and Risk, which oversees many of the world’s largest clearinghouses. Jeff worked for many years in the financial industry in New York and London. Gregor Borosa is one of the first UNIC’s MSc Digital Currency alumnus, with a passionate affinity to Bitcoin, blockchain and beyond. He has a background in computer science and has worked for several years as a lead software engineer in the central bank of Slovenia, working with payment and settlement systems, batch processing and monitoring systems.
Currently, he is freelancing as a consultant-developer and is also an instructor at the University of Nicosia’s MSc program Digital Currency, where he is a lecturer in a course focused on the applications of the blockchain technology and a co-lecturer in the course about programming on the blockchain.
Nicolas T. Courtois
Nicolas Courtois is a Senior Lecturer at University College London, where he teaches about applied cryptography GA12 and cryptanalysis GA18.

Angeliki Dedopoulou is EU Affairs adviser to DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission for the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) project. Her main focus is the ESCO project and its use in related initiatives, such as the EU Skills Profile for Third Country Nationals, EUROPASS and the Blueprint for sectoral cooperation on skills. Adam Hayes, CFA is a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies financial technology in society. Yannis was born in Athens. He has studied history, international relations, journalism and European studies.
Yannis has worked in the advertising industry, has expertise on political communication and has been Communications Director of the Ministry of Education and Chief of staff of a Greek MP.
He has been Director of the think tank DIKTIO since 2013 until 2018.
As part of his duties, he has written several studies on issues such as the Refugee crisis, the Demographic problem of Greece, the evolution of the EMU, the flat tax rate system and two books on the 4th Industrial Revolution.
Also, he has attended the German Marshall Fund Memorial Fellowship for emerging leaders.
John Monarch is the CEO and co-founder of ShipChain, a blockchain startup focused on revolutionizing the industry of freight and logistics. John’s experience in Logistics and Fulfillment has helped numerous startups and e-commerce businesses grow effectively, manage their supply chain, and cut costs. He is a serial entrepreneur with multiple previous ventures, with a background in Physics and Computer Science from Clemson University.

Daniel Pianko is co-founder and managing director at University Ventures. With over a decade of experience in the education industry, Daniel has built a reputation as a trusted education adviser and innovator in student finance, medical education, and postsecondary education. Daniel began his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, and quickly became intrigued by the potential of leveraging private capital to establish the next generation of socially beneficial education companies. After leaving Goldman, Daniel invested in, founded, advised, or managed a number of education-related businesses that led to the creation of University Ventures. Prior to founding University Ventures, he established a student loan fund, served as chief of staff for the public/private investments in the Philadelphia School District, and worked as a hedge fund analyst. At University Ventures, Daniel leads the firm’s investments in the pioneering Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, University of Nicosia/St. George’s University of London Medical School, Vemo Education, Qubed Education, Examity and Galvanize. He serves on a number of nonprofit boards, including the Board of Trustees of Harlem Village Academies. Daniel graduated magna cum laude from Columbia University, and holds a M.B.A. and M.A. in Education from Stanford University. He is the proud father of three children.
Gavin is a Senior Consultant in the EMEA Blockchain Lab. Gavin has valuable fintech experience, having previously worked as a Senior Software Engineer and InfoSec Manager in an Irish payments company.
Gavin has successfully architected, developed and deployed payment authentication systems which have passed both Visa and MasterCard validation. Gavin also introduced a compliance framework for the payments company which achieved PCI DSS 3.2 Level 1 Compliance.
Gavin has worked on live blockchain implementations and POC’s with Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum. Most notably, Gavin delivered DNV GL’s production-grade blockchain solution, from code to live deployment, which has received large media attention and now holds more than 100k live elements.
Gavin aids clients with ideation, focusing on value proposition considering both business viability and technological feasibility, in the blockchain space.
Gavin contains expertise in core blockchain research and development, applied blockchain, information security, backend financial systems and cryptography.
Stefan Tai is Professor and Head of Chair Information Systems Engineering (ISE) at TU Berlin, Germany. Stefan has over 20 years of experience in cutting-edge IT research and development, having held positions in industry research, as director of research labs, and as full professor; in the US and in Europe. Stefan and his team are well-known for their blockchain research from a distributed systems and data management perspective and for their approach to blockchain teaching by means of experimental student projects. The ZoKrates toolbox for off-chaining computation, developed by Jacob Eberhardt, for example, is a popular Ethereum-supported solution coming out of the ISE team.
Mark has been involved with technology throughout his career. After decades of experience in the television industry he became heavily involved in the startup sector. He is a legal expert on cryptocurrencies and digital currency regulation.
In late 2012, he recognised the potential of digital currency and Blockchain technology. The firm he founded, helped organise and lead blockchain conferences at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge universities.
Working in conjunction with the Commonwealth Bank, they organised the most significant blockchain event ever held in Australia: the five-day Sydney Blockchain Workshop. Over 40 industry leaders from around the world flew in for the event in 2015. Speakers included: Vitalkek Buterin (founder of Ethereum); Joi Ito (director of MIT Media Lab); and Lawrence Lessig (Harvard law professor and former US Presidential Candidate).
Mark understands the legal, commercial, and the technical aspects of the technology. He has been a lecturer in a masters course on Digital Currency Regulation with the University of Nicosia since the end of 2015. The course has a strong international reputation for pioneering the field of cryptocurrency studies.
Mark was one of the first lawyers in the world to lecture on the technology and its commercial application. He has spoken at numerous national and international conferences.
His knowledge of this cutting-edge technology is built upon a solid commercial foundation. In addition to working as a lawyer in some of Australia’s leading law firms, Mark has been General Counsel for a telecommunications company and a major television company which were both publicly listed.

Dr Vlachos is a seasoned professional with more than 15 years of experience working with some of the biggest energy companies, consultancy firms, and system integrators worldwide. He is also actively working closely with both academia and industry in well-known projects in Europe, South America, and MENA region that merge the worlds of energy and ICT. Dr Vlachos has been awarded with the “Ericsson Award of Excellence in Telecommunications” and has authored more that 40 scientific publications in international journals and conferences. His current interests are focused at the crossroads of Internet of Things, blockchains, distributed ledger technologies, and cybersecurity with the energy sector. Dr Vlachos holds an MSc and PhD from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
