The purpose of this panel discussion is to present the ways according to which emerging technologies can determine our digital future driven by the interplay of three scientific avenues, namely, Education, Research & Innovation.

The panelists will share their experiences distilled from past activities focusing on the area of blockchain technologies.

In addition, visionary insights will be discussed with reference to a convergence framework targeting the fusion of blockchain with other technologies such as AI and the latest advances of distributed computing.

Professor George M. Giaglis is the Executive Director of the Institute for the Future at the University of Nicosia, as well as a leading expert on blockchain technology and applications and advisor to many blockchain projects and technology start-ups. George has been working on digital currencies and blockchain since 2012, with his main focus being on new forms of industrial organization (programmable smart contracts, decentralized applications and distributed autonomous organizations) and new forms of corporate financing (token economy, crypto-economics and ICOs).

Alexis has a career spanning over 28 years in various business sectors. He has held C-suite positions in large and medium size organizations. Starting his career with an accountancy firm in the City of London where he obtained his ACA qualification and was heavily involved in M&A activity. Moving back to Cyprus eight years later to take over as CFO of the country’s largest media group, with operations spanning from a free to air TV station, several radio stations, magazines, newspapers, and the island’s first online news portal.

Professor Soulla Louca is a professor in the newly founded Department of Digital Innovation as well as a Director at the Institute For the Future at the University of Nicosia. Soulla has been nominated by LATTICE80 in partnership with Miss Kaya as one of the top 100 women in Fintech for 2019. She is one of the first academics to get involved in blockchain technologies (2014) when she assumed the responsibility of the Blockchain Initiative at the University of Nicosia.

Prof. Marinos THEMISTOCLEOUS Director of Education and Training

Professor Marinos Themistocleous is the Associate Dean of School of Business and one of Directors of the Institute For Future (IFF) at the University of Nicosia. He holds a PhD in Information Systems Integration and a Postgraduate Degree in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education both from Brunel University, London, UK. Prior to that, he received an MSc in Information Systems Management and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, both from Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece.

Dr. Klitos CHRISTODOULOU
Dr. Klitos Christodoulou is a faculty member at the Department of Management and MIS – Digital Currency, at the University of Nicosia (UNIC). He is also a research faculty at the Institute For the Future (IFF) at the same University since 2018. He holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and an M.Sc. in Advanced Computer Science – with specialisation in Advanced Applications, both from the University of Manchester, UK. In 2014, Klitos obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester, UK.

Dr. Elias Iosif is Assistant Professor at the School of Business, University of Nicosia (UNIC), as well as scientific lab co-leader at the Distributed Ledgers Research Centre, Institute For the Future, UNIC. He is teaching at the MSc in Digital Currency offered by UNIC, which is the first-degree programme globally on decentralized digital currencies and blockchains.
